How to make a Crochet Magic Ring (adjustable ring) to begin amigurumi and other crocheted pieces worked in the round.
The Magic Ring (or Adjustable Ring) is used when crocheting in rounds, and should be used for Amigurumi projects. The advantages of using the Magic Ring, is that once tightened, it leaves no hole in the center of your work. It replaces the step of “Ch 2 and single crochet x in the 2nd chain from the hook”, which is the first step in many crochet projects.
To make a magic ring proceed as follows:
1: Begin by wrapping the yarn around your fingers, like shown.
2: Put your crochet hook through the center of the loops, like shown.
3: Pull the yarn (that comes from the ball) through the center of the loops, like shown.
4: Hook the yarn (that comes from the ball), like shown, and pull the yarn through the loop on the crochet hook.
5: Put crochet hook through the center of loops, like shown.
6: Hook the yarn (that comes from the ball), like shown.
7: Pull the yarn through the center of the loops, like shown.
8: Hook the yarn from above, like shown, and pull the yarn through BOTH the loops on the crochet hook.
You have now created your first single crochet (sc) on your Magic Ring.
Repeat steps 5-8 to complete the number of single crochets in your pattern then proceed to the final step.
Finally to complete pull on the short yarn end until the stitches form a ring and the center hole disappears.
Therefore the benefit of the Magic Ring, is that you end up with NO visible center hole in the end.
You can easily re-tighten the Magic Ring and hide the yarn end with a yarn needle when your project is complete.
